“A Jamaican brother who had converted to Islam in the 1970s organised the first Jummah prayer in English in the area in Granville Community Centre near Carlton Vale because all the mosques and other centres only did khutbas [sermons] in Arabic or Urdu. This was around 1994. He also organised family Eid events at the centre. There would be a bazaar and halal food with a Caribbean twist. Sometimes even Islamic marriages would happen during Eid events!”
