Ayuba Suleiman Diallo (1701-1773), a victim of the Atlantic Slave trade, became a famous figure in Britain when his life story was one of the first slave narratives to be published. His ability to translate, speak and write Arabic resulted in Sir Hans Sloane, who’s collections became the foundation of the British Museum, commissioning Diallo to translate several of the Arabic manuscripts in his possession.
